KAMPALA, Uganda -Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has today told the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Dr. Vladimir Orlić that “Uganda firmly stands behind the decision not to recognize the unilaterally declared independence of “Kosovo”.
Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February 2008, after years of strained relations.
Speaking at the National Assembly of Serbia, Museveni, who is on a state visit to Serbia to deepen cooperation between the two countries shared the common history and struggle for freedom and independence between the two countries. “Serbia through Yugoslavia is not new to us. In the 1950s/1960s we had very good relations with Yugoslavia under Marshal Tito. We used to follow his stand during that time, especially the neutral position he kept during the quarrel between the Soviet Union and China. I am therefore happy to be here and renew the cooperation between our two countries, especially deepening cooperation in the trade and Agriculture sectors,” he said.
Museveni was received in the country by the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić. The leaders had bilateral talks and signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) in the areas of Economic Development and Agriculture. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic pledged total support and cooperation with Uganda by ensuring that the MOUs between the two countries are implemented.
Museveni also officially opened the Uganda Trade Hub (Uganda Connect) in the city of Belgrade to pave way for Uganda’s products into the Balkan region.
