Türkiye and Uganda enjoy excellent political and economic relations, grounded in shared aspirations, Turkish Ambassador

KAMPALA, Uganda.
Uganda President Yoweri Museveni Wednesday hailed the relations with Türkiye, and applauded Turkish companies for contributing to Uganda’s infrastructure development.
Speaking at the commissioning of Uganda’s largest sports complex in Western Uganda which has been constructed by Turkish construction company, SUMMA, the President hailed the project as a strategic investment in youth development, sports tourism, and national pride.
The facility, one of the most advanced sports complexes in East Africa, that will host both domestic and international fixtures, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), jointly co-hosted with neighbors, Kenya and Tanzania.
Turkish ambassador to Uganda Fatih Ak in his address, highlighted the strong and growing relations between the two countries.

“Türkiye and Uganda enjoy excellent political and economic relations, grounded in mutual respect and shared aspirations. Under the strong and visionary leadership of you (President Museveni) and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, our cooperation has grown into a strategic partnership. Hoima City Stadium stands today as a visible and lasting symbol of that friendship,” he said.
He noted that Turkish companies are contributing to Uganda’s infrastructure development. “I am proud to say that this landmark project was built by SUMMA, a leading Turkish construction company whose professionalism, efficiency, and commitment to quality are recognized worldwide. I commend all Turkish companies operating in Uganda for their commitment and for being strong partners in Uganda’s development journey,” he said
Other Turkish construction companies undertaking infrastructure development in Uganda including Yapı Merkezi currently constructing the Standard Gauge Railway and Polat Yol Yapi Sanyi currently upgrading the 92-kilometer Muyembe–Nakapiripirit road.
He noted that Uganda has produced outstanding football talent including Majid Musisi, a one holding a record of highest transfer fee at $1m when he joined Turkish team Bursaspor in 1994.
“Majid Musisi proudly represented Uganda and left a lasting impression in Türkiye during his time at Bursaspor. His famous “crocodile walk” goal celebration remains unforgettable. Today, we pay tribute to him as a football icon and as a bridge of friendship between Uganda and Türkiye,” the ambassador said.
According to Selim Bora, Summa’s chairman, the stadium will serve football and indoor games, while creating a space for sports tourism and corporate events.

Uganda’s Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang told TRT that the government has earmarked funds for construction of other sports facilities across the country in a bid to boost the sports sub-sector. “President Museveni approved $130M that was used to construct Hoima City Stadium, similar other projects are in the pipeline,” he said.
The construction of the area created jobs exceeding 1060, with 69% being Ugandans, according to Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel, the general secretary of Uganda’s National Council of Sports. The complex sits on 16.8 hectares with a parking lot for more than 800 vehicles.
