KAMPALA, Uganda –South Africa’s historic position of going to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the subject of genocide, to seek an urgent halt to the humanitarian catastrophe and massacre of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel has been applauded by delegates attending the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Uganda.

Speaking one after the other threw their weight behind Palestine, calling to hold Israel accountable. “We support the historic position of South Africa in going to the ICJ on the subject of genocide, we will be waiting for the ruling of the court at the end of the month, we thank you in advance for standing with the Palestinian people,” Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour said.

Submissions from several country delegates are calling on the summit to take a stand on the destruction of Gaza by Israel Zionists.

Delegates said the NAM summit must find the right language to address what they called “the violent and savage aggression by the state of Israel in perpetuating a genocide” in Gaza, and that the war in Gaza be included in what is known as the ‘Outcome Document’ that should form the basis of higher-level talks.

In its presentations to the ICJ, South Africa put forward detailed and substantive arguments to show that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide against the Palestinian people, that Israel’s political and military leaders have expressed genocidal intent, and that provisional measures are necessary to stop Israel’s actions. A 1948 convention, ratified after the Holocaust, made genocide a crime under international law and gave the ICJ the authority to determine whether states have committed it. The court’s rulings are legally binding
