The security crisis in the troubled eastern part of DRC has forced many to flee to Uganda
KAMPALA, Uganda, Update : 30.10.2024
Uganda President Yoweri Museveni Wednesday met with his Congolese counterpart Felix Tshisekedi at State House Entebbe and discussed “among other issues, Security between Uganda and DRC, Regional Security, and infrastructural developments, including key roads of mutual economic benefit.
” We are all in agreement that what Congo needs is what Uganda needs. Hence, we have discussed everything here, and I thank H.E Tshisekedi for responding positively to my invitation for this meeting,” Museveni said in a statement.
With permission from Felix Tshisekedi, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is engaged in a joint military operation with the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), pursuing Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group with ties to ISIL (ISIS), which has been launching attacks on Ugandan soil, from bases in eastern DRC.
Tshisekedi’s visit follows South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent visit to Uganda, in which he discussed the situation in the volatile eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Since the 1990s, eastern DRC has been embroiled in violence. Millions of people have been killed, and more than 5 million others displaced by civil wars. To date, more than 100 armed groups operate in the volatile region.
The current security crisis and heavy fighting between the Congolese armed forces and the M23 rebel group in the country’s troubled eastern part of the country forced many to flee to Uganda.
